What is a Junior Warden?

On the first Sunday in February, we held our first “ Coffee with the Wardens” after both the 8:00 and 10:15 service. Fred and I were pleased to meet with members of our Parish to share their views. This is all part of our commitment to insure that communications are always open to all. At our first “Coffee with the Wardens,” I was asked the question, “ just what is a Junior Warden?” and what is their area of responsibility?

Let’s begin with the Sample Job Description for a Junior Warden from The Vestry Resource Guide.

Qualifications and Gifts

Have a love God and demonstrate a commitment to following the way of Christ.
Be active in and knowledgeable about the congregation, its programs and governance.
Be known as someone who is fair, interacts well with people and is respected by members of the congregation.
Have respect and, preferably, affection for the rector.
Have an ability to “check one’s ego at the door,” to be a servant of the people.
Have an enthusiasm and vitality for this vocation....

Thank You!

I want to take this opportunity to express how honored and excited I am about taking the role as your Senior Warden this coming Church year. I give you my commitment to work diligently with our Rector, Junior Warden, and the Vestry to provide the leadership and discipline needed to build on our strong heritage to insure the long term viability of our Parish. Despite the white water we encountered this past year, significant progress was made by the Vestry in developing a workable Strategic Plan for the future that will provide the resources to grow and prosper. It will take hard work by everyone in the Parish, but working together we will be successful.

As background, last spring the Vestry formed a Strategic Planning Committee comprised of Margie Hildebrandt, Leslie Anne Bird, Riley Parke, Tom Giffels and this writer. We met about twice a month in the evenings for about 6 -7 months to develop a Five Year Strategic Plan for the Church reporting our findings to the Vestry and gaining their concurrence as we went along. The final Five Year plan was outlined to everyone at the annual Stewardship meeting this past October.

Beanie Babies Build Bridges

Beanie Babies Build Bridges in Bagdad is the newest outreach effort to begin at Ascension. Beginning in September, we will gather Beanie Babies (not patriotic, or religious please) that will be shipped to a unit lead by one of our own. His troops will then pass them out to the children of Bagdad as they greet them on their patrols. They should be in new or nearly new condition and can be placed in a box in the office. The little Beanie Babies are a small way the soldiers can show they care. Thanks for your help in this effort!!!!

Vestry Retreat Update to the Congregation

Your Vestry attended a retreat the weekend of April 20th and 21st with the express goal of writing a clear, concise and cognitive Vision and Mission Statement for the Church. In conjunction with the Strategic Planning Committee, this Vision and Mission Statement will guide our work in giving the Church a viable and feasible five year strategic plan for growth, needed capital improvements, while setting a course and discipline for financial stability now and in the future.
